If you're shopping for a small crossover in Southwestern Pennsylvania, two questions probably matter more than most: how it handles a hilly winter and what it costs to keep fueled. The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross and the 2027 Honda HR-V both seat five, and both offer all-wheel drive (AWD). Only the Corolla Cross comes as a hybrid, and every Corolla Cross Hybrid has AWD as standard. The 2027 HR-V has one powertrain, a gas four-cylinder, and every trim comes with a 9-inch touchscreen. The figures below compare a 2026 Corolla Cross with a 2027 HR-V.
2026 Toyota Corolla Cross vs. 2027 Honda HR-V
The Versions You Can Buy
Toyota and Honda split these two lineups differently. Toyota offers the Corolla Cross three ways: gas with front-wheel drive (FWD), gas with AWD, or hybrid with AWD. The 2027 HR-V comes two ways, FWD or AWD, with the same gas engine in both. Every version uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT), an automatic with no fixed gear steps. In the hybrid, it's an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT).

Engines, Hybrid Power and EPA Ratings
All five versions use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, though not the same one. Gas versions of the Corolla Cross (L, LE and XLE) make 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The three hybrid grades have their own engine, which makes 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque on its own. Toyota rates the combined output of the whole hybrid system at 196 horsepower.
Every 2027 HR-V, from the LX to the EX-L, makes 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. On paper, Toyota's gas engine makes more horsepower and more torque than Honda's. For light towing, Toyota rates every 2026 Corolla Cross configuration at up to 1,500 lb.
All five versions run on regular fuel, and the EPA rates each one separately.
| Version | City (mpg) | Highway (mpg) | Combined (mpg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Corolla Cross FWD: L, LE, XLE | 31 | 33 | 32 |
| 2026 Corolla Cross AWD: L, LE, XLE | 29 | 31 | 30 |
| 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid, every grade (AWD) | 46 | 39 | 42 |
| 2027 HR-V FWD: LX, Sport, EX-L | 26 | 32 | 28 |
| 2027 HR-V AWD: LX, Sport, EX-L | 25 | 30 | 27 |
When both have front-wheel drive, the gas Corolla Cross is rated 32 mpg combined to the 2027 HR-V's 28. When both have all-wheel drive, it's 30 mpg to 27.
The Corolla Cross Hybrid stands apart. The 2027 HR-V has no hybrid version, so there's no Honda rating to compare with the hybrid's 42 mpg combined. The hybrid is also the only one of the five versions rated higher in the city (46 mpg) than on the highway (39 mpg). If most of your miles are in town, that city figure is the one to weigh.
All-Wheel Drive for Southwestern Pennsylvania Winters
Every grade and trim of both models can be had with all-wheel drive, and each maker has its own name for its system. AWD is optional on the 2027 HR-V and on Toyota's gas grades, while every Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with it standard.
| Version | Maker's name for its AWD system | Standard or optional |
|---|---|---|
| Gas Corolla Cross L, LE, XLE | All-Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Control | Optional; FWD is standard |
| Corolla Cross Hybrid S, SE, XSE | Electronic On-Demand AWD | Standard on every hybrid grade |
| 2027 HR-V LX, Sport, EX-L | Real-Time AWD | Optional on every trim; FWD is standard |
Ground clearance is higher on the Corolla Cross in every pairing. That matters here in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, which averages about 43 inches of snow a year in the valleys and up to about 75 inches at higher elevations. Winters like that are why we'd weigh all-wheel drive and ground clearance alongside fuel economy.
Honda gives all three HR-V trims Dynamic Drive Modes with Econ, Normal and Snow settings.

Cargo Room and Body Size
Toyota and Honda each measure cargo space their own way. Corolla Cross cargo room changes with the drivetrain, while the 2027 HR-V lists one set of figures for all its trims.
| Measurement | Corolla Cross, gas FWD | Corolla Cross, gas AWD | Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD | 2027 HR-V, every trim (FWD or AWD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cargo, rear seat up (cu ft) | 24.0 | 21.5 | 21.5 | 24.4 |
| Cargo, rear seat folded (cu ft) | 46.9 | 44 | 44 | 55.1 |
| Length (in) | 176.1 | 176.1 | 176.8 | 179.8 |
| Width (in) | 71.9 | 71.9 | 71.9 | 72.4 |
| Wheelbase (in) | 103.9 | 103.9 | 103.9 | 104.5 |
Outside, the 2027 HR-V is longer and wider than any Corolla Cross version, and it rides on a longer wheelbase.
Grades, Trims and Screens
Toyota builds the 2026 Corolla Cross in six grades, and Honda builds the 2027 HR-V in three trims.
Corolla Cross Grades
The gas models come in L, LE and XLE grades, each with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The hybrid comes in Hybrid S, Hybrid SE and Hybrid XSE grades, and all three have all-wheel drive. 2027 HR-V Trims
The 2027 HR-V comes as an LX, Sport or EX-L, each with FWD or AWD. Every trim has 180-watt audio. The LX rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Sport and EX-L ride on 18-inch alloys. The Sport and EX-L also add heated front seats, heated side mirrors and Key Fob Activated Remote Engine Start, none of which the LX has.
Screens by Grade
Corolla Cross screen sizes step up by grade, while every HR-V trim gets the same screens.
| Grade or trim | Touchscreen | Driver display |
|---|---|---|
| Corolla Cross L, Hybrid S | 8.0 in | 7 in |
| Corolla Cross LE, Hybrid SE | 8.0 in (10.5 in optional) | 7 in |
| Corolla Cross XLE, Hybrid XSE | 10.5 in | 12.3 in |
| 2027 HR-V LX, Sport, EX-L | 9 in | 7 in |
The HR-V's touchscreen is larger than the standard screen in the Corolla Cross L, LE, Hybrid S and Hybrid SE. The XLE and Hybrid XSE come with a larger screen than the HR-V's. Both models have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on every grade and trim.
Starting Prices
Each range runs from lowest to highest grade or trim.
| Version | Price at Launch |
|---|---|
| Corolla Cross, gas FWD | $25,035 (L) to $29,960 (XLE) |
| Corolla Cross, gas AWD | $26,335 (L) to $31,410 (XLE) |
| Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD | $29,395 (Hybrid S) to $33,430 (Hybrid XSE) |
| 2027 HR-V, every trim | $26,600 (LX) to $30,450 (EX-L) |
Corolla Cross figures are Toyota's starting MSRP at launch, excluding destination; HR-V figures are Honda's "starting at" prices, which Honda does not tie to a drivetrain.
Toyota Safety Sense and Warranty Coverage
Every 2026 Corolla Cross, gas or hybrid, comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
NHTSA has not published an overall rating for the 2026 Corolla Cross. Ratings change as new tests are published, so check NHTSA.gov for the latest.
Toyota and Honda back these two models with the same basic, powertrain and corrosion terms, and the Corolla Cross Hybrid adds coverage for its hybrid system and hybrid battery.
| Coverage | 2026 Corolla Cross, every grade | 2027 HR-V, every trim |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (Honda calls it new-vehicle limited) | 3 years / 36,000 miles | 3 years / 36,000 miles |
| Powertrain | 5 years / 60,000 miles | 5 years / 60,000 miles |
| Corrosion | 5 years / unlimited miles (rust-through) | 5 years / unlimited miles |
| Hybrid system | 8 years / 100,000 miles (hybrid grades only) | No hybrid offered |
| Hybrid battery | 10 years / 150,000 miles (hybrid grades only) | No hybrid offered |
Where Each One Comes Out Ahead
Matched version for version, the Corolla Cross has the edge on fuel economy, power and ground clearance. It's also the only one of the two offered as a hybrid. The 2027 HR-V is larger outside and holds more fuel.
Which one has the larger touchscreen depends on the Corolla Cross grade, and all-wheel drive is available across both lineups. Basic, powertrain and corrosion warranty terms match, and the hybrid grades add hybrid-system and battery coverage. Cargo space has no clear winner, since each maker measures it differently.
Which One Fits Your Driving
The right pick depends on your winters, your daily miles and what you carry.
- If winter traction and fuel cost both weigh on you: Look first at a Corolla Cross Hybrid. All-wheel drive comes standard, and Toyota gives no Corolla Cross a higher EPA combined rating.
- If you want all-wheel drive with a gas engine: Any gas Corolla Cross grade can have it, the L included, so there's no need to move up a grade. Equipped that way, each has a higher EPA combined rating than the 2027 HR-V AWD.
- If most of your driving is in town and you can skip all-wheel drive: A front-wheel-drive Corolla Cross has the most cargo room of any Corolla Cross. It's also the more fuel-efficient of the two gas Corolla Cross versions. Before you settle on it, look at the hybrid's EPA city rating, even though the hybrid comes only with all-wheel drive.
- If cargo space decides it: Each maker measures cargo its own way, so the numbers alone won't settle it. If your weekends mean loading gear for Ohiopyle State Park, the Youghiogheny River or the ski slopes of the Laurel Highlands, hold both makers' figures up against the gear you actually carry.
- If you want the same screen whichever trim you pick: Look at the 2027 HR-V. Every trim has a 9-inch touchscreen, and you can choose front-wheel or all-wheel drive on any of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you're still choosing between a Corolla Cross and a 2027 HR-V, these answers go straight to the details.
Is there a hybrid version of the 2027 Honda HR-V?
No. Honda offers the 2027 HR-V with one powertrain on every trim: a gas 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a CVT. If a hybrid is what you're after, Toyota's 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid S, SE and XSE come with standard Electronic On-Demand AWD and carry a 42 mpg EPA combined rating.
Which one is more fuel efficient with all-wheel drive?
With gas engines, the Corolla Cross. A gas Corolla Cross AWD is EPA-rated at 30 mpg combined, against 27 for the 2027 HR-V AWD. The HR-V has no hybrid to compare with Toyota's, which comes only with all-wheel drive and is rated 42.
How much cargo space does each one list?
The 2027 HR-V lists 24.4 cubic feet behind the second row and 55.1 with that row folded. The Corolla Cross with front-wheel drive lists 24.0 and 46.9, and the all-wheel-drive and hybrid versions list 21.5 and 44. Each maker takes its own measurements.
Which one has more ground clearance?
The Corolla Cross. Gas versions measure 8.1 inches and the hybrid 8.0, while the 2027 HR-V measures 7.0 inches in LX and EX-L trim and 7.3 inches as a Sport.
Where can I check crash-test ratings?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes crash-test ratings at NHTSA.gov. Look up either model there by its model year.
Do you sell the Honda HR-V?
We sell new Toyotas, not the Honda HR-V. You can schedule a Corolla Cross or Corolla Cross Hybrid test drive with us.
Do you help with financing?
Yes. We help arrange financing through lenders, whatever your credit history. Our finance department is the place to start.
Which one starts at a lower price?
A front-wheel-drive Corolla Cross L starts at $25,035 (MSRP at launch, excluding destination), against $26,600 for the 2027 HR-V LX (Honda's "starting at" price at launch). The figures are not stated on the same basis, so compare the prices on the vehicles themselves.
Can I handle most of the purchase without coming in?
Buyers report that deals are often completed remotely, by phone, text or email, with a quick in-person pickup. Contact us to get started.
