2026 Toyota RAV4 vs. Toyota Corolla Cross

The RAV4 is bigger, and cargo is where you feel it. Behind the second row it holds 37.8 cu ft. The Corolla Cross gives you 24.0 cu ft in front-wheel-drive form and 21.5 cu ft with all-wheel drive, because the rear drive hardware claims some of that space back. Fold the second row and the RAV4 opens to 70.4 cu ft, against 46.9 cu ft for the front-drive Corolla Cross.

The RAV4's advantage works out to 14 to 16 cu ft more room behind the seats, and better than 23 cu ft more once the seats drop. Picture the loads. A weekend of camping gear for four heading to Ohiopyle. A pair of ski bags for Seven Springs plus everyone's boots. A full farmers-market haul with a stroller already in the back. Those are the days the RAV4's extra room stops being a number.

Shopping the hybrids specifically? Then read the cargo line differently. Every Corolla Cross Hybrid is all-wheel drive, so all of them carry the 21.5 cu ft figure, not the 24.0. Put the two hybrids side by side and the honest behind-the-seats gap is 16.3 cu ft, the widest version of this comparison rather than the narrowest.

Outside, the RAV4 measures 181.0 in long, 73.0 in wide and 66.7 in tall on a 105.9-in wheelbase. The Corolla Cross runs 176.1 to 176.8 in long, 71.9 in wide and 64.9 in tall on a 103.9-in wheelbase. Read the height twice if you have an older garage or a low carport: the Corolla Cross sits 1.8 in lower. On a narrow Uniontown side street, or in a downtown lot laid out long before either car existed, 4.9 in of length and 1.1 in of width count too.

Three rows there deserve a callout.

• Ground clearance is a tie: the Corolla Cross rides at 8.0 to 8.1 in and the standard RAV4 at 8.1 in, so choosing the smaller crossover does not mean scraping over a rutted gravel drive or an unplowed alley. Only the RAV4 Woodland climbs higher, at 8.5 in.
• Weight favors the smaller car: the Corolla Cross is roughly 550 lb lighter at the base, which is part of why it costs less to buy and feels lighter on its feet.
• The bigger tank pairs with the better mileage: 14.5 gal against 12.4 or 13.2 gal, alongside the RAV4's equal-or-better rating, so the larger SUV is also the one that asks for the pump less often on a Morgantown or Greensburg run.

Passenger space is the one place this page can give you only half the picture. The Corolla Cross's passenger volume is 94.9 cu ft, or 93.8 cu ft with the moonroof.

Where both carry figures is the shell around those passengers: the RAV4 is 2.0 in longer in wheelbase, 1.1 in wider and 1.8 in taller. So sit in both. Five minutes settles it better than either number would have.

Here is the finding that catches almost everyone out.

The smaller vehicle is not the more efficient one.

A RAV4 Hybrid AWD in LE or SE trim is rated 46/39/42 mpg city/highway/combined. The hybrid Corolla Cross with all-wheel drive is rated 46/39/42. Identical. Not close: identical. And a RAV4 Hybrid FWD, at 47/40/43, beats every Corolla Cross configuration published.

The conventional gas Corolla Cross returns 31/33/32 mpg with front-wheel drive and 29/31/30 with all-wheel drive, putting it 11 to 13 mpg behind the RAV4 Hybrid on the combined number.

So say it plainly: you do not buy the Corolla Cross to save fuel. You buy it to save money. That is a real reason, and we make the case for it below. But if fuel economy is what decides this, the RAV4 Hybrid has already answered you.

Read that table one more way before you move on. Four RAV4 configurations fall below the Corolla Cross Hybrid's 42 combined, and they are the ones you would pick on purpose for other reasons: the Woodland at 41/35/38, and the XLE Premium AWD, XSE and Limited at 41 combined. Every other RAV4 Hybrid matches the Corolla Cross Hybrid or beats it. Stepping up in size costs you little or nothing at the pump here, which is the opposite of how this comparison usually goes.

Here is what is doing the work under each hood.

What that adds up to: the RAV4 Hybrid carries 40 more hp than the Corolla Cross Hybrid and 67 more hp than the gas Corolla Cross, and still matches or beats both on mileage. Its hybrid system runs off a 247.5-volt lithium-ion battery rated at 4.1 Ah. Merge onto I-70 with four people and their luggage aboard, or pull the grade out of a valley, and that spread is what you notice first. The cargo numbers never even come up.

The one thing only the Corolla Cross offers: a conventional gas engine. If you would simply rather not own a hybrid, the Corolla Cross L, LE or XLE is the car we can put in front of you.

Towing: the RAV4 Hybrid is rated to pull 1,750 lb (LE, SE FWD, XLE Premium FWD) or 3,500 lb (Woodland and the AWD XLE Premium, SE, XSE and Limited grades), with a 175 lb or 350 lb tongue weight to match. The Corolla Cross tow rating is not listed here, so we will not put a figure on it. If a small camper, a utility trailer or a pair of sleds is anywhere in your plans, the RAV4 is the one with a number attached.

That 3,500 lb rating is not automatic across the RAV4 range, though. It arrives with all-wheel drive from the SE up, while the LE and the front-drive grades are rated 1,750 lb, so a shopper who tows and also wants the 47/40/43 front-drive rating has to pick one. Towing is one job among many here, not the whole story.

This is the genuinely local part. The Fayette valley averages around 43 in of snow a year, and the higher ground near Chestnut Ridge sees closer to 75 in. Add roads that change elevation on nearly every commute, plus a stretch of US-40, the old National Road, that climbs whether you want it to or not, and all-wheel drive stops being a luxury item around here. It is why our lot skews heavily toward all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive in the first place.

Both of these SUVs use the same Electronic On-Demand AWD system, so the winter question is not which model. It is which specific car, because how you get all-wheel drive differs on each side.

Two things fall out of that table worth having in your head before you shop.

• The cheap way into a hybrid with all-wheel drive runs through the Corolla Cross: no front-drive Corolla Cross Hybrid exists at all, so every hybrid Corolla Cross on the lot is already an all-wheel-drive car. The entry point is the Hybrid S AWD, which launched at $29,395 for 2026, excluding destination. Nothing about it compromises on traction, and it carries the same 46/39/42 rating as a RAV4 Hybrid AWD.
• The RAV4 gives you the choice, and the choice has a cost: all-wheel drive is available across the RAV4 Hybrid range rather than baked in, so you can take the 47/40/43 front-drive rating instead if you would rather. For a Fayette County winter that is a real decision, not a formality. Ask yourself where the car sleeps and what it climbs in February.

One more honest note. Ground clearance is a tie at roughly 8 in, so neither of these is your answer if you want serious clearance for unplowed back roads. The Corolla Cross approach and departure angles are not listed here, so we cannot set them beside the RAV4's 19 and 23 degrees for you. Neither of these is short on equipment. The ceilings just sit at different heights, and that matters more than the starting points, because the grade you actually buy decides what you get.

Two items live on one side of that comparison only, so we list them as each vehicle's own equipment rather than pretend they are a scoreboard. The RAV4 carries a Drive Recorder dash camera as standard, across the range. The Corolla Cross offers Drive Connect, Wi-Fi Connect and Remote Connect among its available connected services.

The practical read: a Corolla Cross XLE or Hybrid XSE buys you the 10.5-in screen and the 12.3-in digital cluster that a mid-grade RAV4 has as standard, while the RAV4 keeps a step above with the 12.9-in screen on the Limited. Which is a long way of saying the technology question is really the pricing question. That is next.

Both SUVs come standard with a Toyota Safety Sense driver-assist suite, but not the same generation of it.

RAV4 Hybrid: Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, standard. That includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Eco Mode, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist and Proactive Driving Assist. Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking is available, and standard on the Woodland.

Corolla Cross: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, standard. Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking is available.

TSS 4.0 is a full generation newer than TSS 3.0, and that is a straightforward point for the RAV4. We are not going to itemize the Corolla Cross suite feature by feature here, because we would rather show you the window sticker on the specific car than paste a list we cannot stand behind. Ask us on the lot and we will read it with you. On roads like US-40 in a January dusk, the radar cruise and the lane-keeping are the features that earn their keep, and both cars have a version of them.

Government crash test ratings: neither the 2026 RAV4 nor the 2026 Corolla Cross carries an overall government crash test rating at this time. Not a low score. No rating published yet. We will not put a star count on a page that Toyota and the testing agencies have not published.

Warranty: on the coverage that matters to a hybrid buyer, these two are identical.

There is no warranty argument between these two. Whatever tips your decision, it is not this table, and any salesperson who tells you otherwise is reaching.

The Corolla Cross gets its own section below, and it earns it. Here is the RAV4's side, stated just as plainly:

• Cargo that is not in the same class: 37.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats against 24.0, and 70.4 with the seats folded against 46.9. That is not an edge, it is a different size of vehicle. If the back of the car regularly has to swallow a Costco run, hockey bags, or a weekend's camping gear, the argument ends here.
• Real power: 226 hp front-wheel drive, 236 with all-wheel drive, against 169 on the gas Corolla Cross and 196 for its hybrid. On these grades, with the car loaded, you feel it.
• It tows, and the Corolla Cross does not: the RAV4 is rated from 1,750 up to 3,500 pounds depending on grade. There is no tow rating listed here for the Corolla Cross, so if a small trailer, a pair of ATVs, or a boat is in your plans, this is not a close call.
• A newer generation of driver assistance: Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 standard, against 3.0 on the Corolla Cross. Same idea, one generation further along.
• And it is still the efficiency leader: 47 / 40 / 43 at its best against the Corolla Cross's 46 / 39 / 42. The smaller, cheaper car does not actually save you fuel here, which surprises most people.

We would be doing you a disservice if this page read as one long argument for spending more. The Corolla Cross wins on the thing most shoppers are actually deciding with, and it wins clearly. Every figure below is 2026 launch MSRP and excludes the $1,450 destination charge, which is identical on both vehicles.

• Price to get in the door: $25,035 for a Corolla Cross L FWD against $31,900 for a RAV4 Hybrid LE FWD, both 2026 launch MSRP, excluding destination. That is $6,865 less. Destination is the same $1,450 on both sides, so the gap survives the paperwork intact.
• Price to get all-wheel drive: Corolla Cross L AWD at $26,335 against RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD at $33,300, same 2026 launch MSRP basis, excluding destination. That is $6,965 less for winter traction. Given what the roads here do between December and March, this is the comparison a lot of Fayette County shoppers are really running.
• Price to get a hybrid with all-wheel drive: Corolla Cross Hybrid S AWD at $29,395 against RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD at $33,300, again 2026 launch MSRP, excluding destination. $3,905 less, for the identical 46/39/42 rating. This is the narrowest the price gap ever gets, which is worth knowing, because it is also the matchup where the RAV4's cargo advantage is at its widest at 37.8 cu ft against 21.5.
• The loaded-versus-base argument: this is the sharpest one. A fully loaded Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE AWD launched at $33,430 for 2026, excluding destination. The least expensive RAV4 Hybrid with AWD, the LE, launched at $33,300 on the same basis. They are $130 apart. At roughly one price you can have every option the Corolla Cross offers, including the 10.5-in screen, the 12.3-in digital cluster and JBL Premium Audio, or you can have the entry RAV4 with a cloth interior and the smaller screen. Neither answer is wrong. It comes down to whether you would rather have the space or the equipment.
• Easier to live with day to day: lower, shorter, narrower and about 550 lb lighter. If your driving is a Uniontown commute, a school run and a Saturday of errands, the smaller footprint is not a consolation prize. It is the point. Nobody thinks about that 1.8-in height difference until the garage door in a house built in 1940 makes the decision for them.

That overlap is the whole decision in a nutshell, and it is why we would rather walk the two tables with you than have you guess from a screen.
