Engine System
The 3.4L i-FORCE MAX Hybrid is built for the low-rpm torque that Toyota trucks and large SUVs need. The system places a 48-hp electric motor-generator between the twin-turbo V6 and the 10-speed automatic transmission, so electric assist can support the drivetrain directly when the vehicle is accelerating, towing, or climbing.

How the System Works
The 3.4L i-FORCE MAX Hybrid uses a parallel hybrid layout. The electric motor sits between the gas engine and the automatic transmission, so it assists the drivetrain through the same power path used by the twin-turbo V6. That makes the system different from Toyota's power-split hybrid designs used in models like Camry Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid.
The electric motor supports the engine at low speeds, where trucks and SUVs need help getting weight moving. That assist is useful when starting from a stop, pulling a trailer, climbing a grade, or accelerating onto the highway.
The twin-turbo V6 works with the electric motor and 10-speed automatic transmission to produce 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Peak torque arrives at 2,400 rpm, which matters for towing, highway merging, and large SUV acceleration with passengers or cargo aboard.
The 10-speed automatic transmission gives the i-FORCE MAX a traditional truck feel. Unlike an eCVT hybrid, this system shifts through fixed gears while the electric motor adds torque as needed. That layout helps the Tundra and Sequoia keep the feel of a Toyota truck or SUV while adding hybrid assistance.
